Tarpon’s Structures division is on the verge of revolutionizing the traditional industrial modular accommodation complexes used for remote workforce housing. On August 7, Suncor Energy Inc. signed a contract with Tarpon for a two-story steel complex, with 700 rooms, measuring over 195,000 sq. ft. Tarpon is scheduled to deliver the 36 assembled modular units to the Firebag Camp near Fort McMurray in one year’s time. The significance of this monumental signing – Tarpon’s largest contract to date – is that the new dormitories will replace technology that has been around for more than 50 years. “There is quite a story behind claiming this win,” explains Dale Berstad, Senior Vice President, Structures Division. “We were approached by Suncor to develop a product that is unlike anything that currently exists in the industry – state-of-the-art living accommodations that are comparable to modern, inner-city condominiums. Our strong background in steel structures and modular units enabled our team to come up with a design that exceeded our client’s expectations. Strategic planning and strengthening of our internal capabilities over the past year helped provide the necessary foundation to capture this contract with Suncor.” With the labour shortage in Alberta, providing superior accommodations is a key to attracting and retaining personnel to work in the oil sands. “The look and quality of our product helped make the decision a favourable one,” says Berstad. “The advantage to the client is receiving the modular structures on-site – fully built and installed by Tarpon.” Fabrication of the units will take place at the Structures’ shop in Calgary. Then, prior to shipping, teams of tradespeople will complete the interior finishing. Once at the Suncor Firebag site, the modular units will be set on piles and Tarpon employees will connect them together, bringing the project to a close. Each room, measuring 209 square feet, includes living quarters and a private bathroom. “The contract includes corridors connecting each unit with the central building that houses the administration offices, kitchen, dining hall and recreation facilities,” says Berstad. “Tarpon is providing everything except the televisions and mattresses.” As Structures advances with this new initiative, the market potential for Tarpon is immense. “This contract with Suncor provides Tarpon with the opportunity to strive for new heights,” says Kevin Fleury, President & CEO. “We are adding another innovative product to our integrated services, and I thank the team and everyone involved for taking the leap to compete and win in this new arena.” |
